Aprendiendo un idioma nuevo? 4 habilidades de adquisición de idiomas que debes conocer.

So, you want to learn a new language but you're confused with all the information out there on the web about the right methods to do so, right? You ask yourself what is the correct approach?

Entonces, quieres aprender un nuevo idioma pero te confundes con toda la información que hay en la web sobre los métodos correctos para hacerlo, ¿verdad? Te preguntas a ti mismo ¿cuál es el enfoque correcto?

Some sources affirm that you can learn any language without any grammar and in a natural way just like kids do. Is that possible? Unfortunately there is a lot of misleading information out there used to confuse and take advantage of people.

Algunas fuentes afirman que se puede aprender cualquier idioma sin gramática y de forma natural, como hacen los niños. ¿Es eso posible? Desafortunadamente hay mucha información engañosa que se usa para confundir y aprovecharse de la gente.

To really answer those questions we need to go to the basics of language learning and acquisition. Based on my own experience learning English as a foreign language and my experience as a language teacher I can tell you how to go about learning a language. There are some effective ways to succeed in your language learning goals as adults.

Para responder realmente a esas preguntas tenemos que ir a los fundamentos del aprendizaje y la adquisición del lenguaje. Basándome en mi propia experiencia en el aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera y en mi experiencia como profesora de idiomas, puedo decirte cómo aprender un idioma. Hay muchas forma efectivas para tener éxito en tus objetivos de aprendizaje de idiomas como adulto.

I´ve been an English teacher for more than 10 years and a Spanish teacher for 5 Years, I live in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and I recently decided to develop an immersion program in my city for people who want to experience not only the language, but also the culture, which is an important component in language acquisition.

He sido profesora de inglés durante más de 10 años y profesor de español durante 5 años, vivo en Hermosillo, Sonora México y recientemente he decidido desarrollar un programa de inmersión en mi ciudad para las personas que quieren experimentar no sólo el idioma, sino también la cultura, que es un componente importante en la adquisición del lenguaje.

Language acquisition is not the same as language learning.

La adquisición de un idioma no es lo mismo que el aprendizaje de un idioma.

We can learn vocabulary and structure from a language class. However, students should be exposed to culture and language to practice these 4 language skills. Practice is essential in order to acquire the language, which means, being able to use it and understand it in an advanced and natural way.

Podemos aprender vocabulario y estructura en una clase de idiomas. Sin embargo, los estudiantes deben estar expuestos a la cultura y el lenguaje para practicar estas 4 habilidades lingüísticas. La práctica es esencial para adquirir el idioma, lo que significa, ser capaz de usarlo y entenderlo de una manera avanzada y natural.

If you´re learning a new language you must know that there are four basic language skills. Every student should aim to practice all of them. However a true beginner might not be able to practice all of them. I´ll tell you about my experience with each skills as I was learning English.

Si estás aprendiendo un nuevo idioma debes saber que hay cuatro habilidades básicas del idioma. Cada estudiante debe aspirar a practicarlas todas. Sin embargo, un verdadero principiante podría no ser capaz de practicarlas todas. Les contaré mi experiencia con cada una de las habilidades mientras aprendía inglés.

First, there´s Reading.

Primero, está la lectura.

Usually, the easiest way to get exposed to the new language is by reading. I remember when I was growing up I used to read a lot of things in English because I was born in Mexico; in the north part of Mexico to be precise. I was very exposed to the English language because there´s a lot of influence from the United States. We are neighbors, so I would travel with my family down to Tucson, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chula Vista in California and other places close to the Sonora state where I'm from.

Por lo general, la forma más fácil de ser expuesto a al nuevo lenguaje es la lectura. Recuerdo que cuando era niña leía muchas cosas en inglés porque nací en México; en el norte de México para ser exactos. Estuve muy expuesta al idioma inglés porque hay mucha influencia de los Estados Unidos. Somos vecinos, así que viajaba con mi familia a Tucson, Phoenix, Los Ángeles, Chula Vista en California y otros lugares cercanos al estado de Sonora de donde soy.

I was very exposed to the English language in the form of menus, signs, immigration forms, stores, magazines newspapers, you name it.

Estuve muy expuesta al idioma inglés en forma de menús, letreros, formularios de inmigración, tiendas, revistas, periódicos, y demás.

Not only did I read English in the United States but also in Mexico because we tend to borrow words and expressions from English as it happens with other languages. This is very common.

No sólo leía el inglés en los Estados Unidos sino también en México porque tendemos a tomar prestadas palabras y expresiones del inglés como sucede con otros idiomas. Esto es muy común.

Once in a while I would pick up an English magazine and I would read it even though I wouldn't understand it. I would just look at the pictures and read the articles trying to get the meaning of it by the context.

De vez en cuando tomaba una revista inglesa y la leía aunque no la entendía. Sólo miraba las fotos y leía los artículos tratando de entender el significado por medio del contexto.

However, the next skill is a better and more advanced way to learn.

Sin embargo, la siguiente habilidad es una mejor y más avanzada manera de aprender.

Second, there´s listening.

En segundo lugar, está escuchar.

Listening is the most important skill since with this skill we are also exposed to the sounds of the language. It is very different from reading because when you read, even though you don't know how the words sound, you might understand what you're reading. Listening, on the other hand, is a little bit more complicated, so it is easier to first acquire good reading comprehension skills and then good listening comprehension skills.

Escuchar es la habilidad más importante ya que con esta habilidad también estamos expuestos a los sonidos del lenguaje. Es muy diferente de la lectura porque cuando lees, aunque no sepas cómo suenan las palabras, puedes entender lo que estás leyendo. Escuchar, por otro lado, es un poco más complicado, por lo que es más fácil adquirir primero una buena capacidad de comprensión de lectura y luego una buena capacidad de comprensión auditiva.

When I was growing up, we used to have cable TV and I would be exposed to a lot of American movies and a lot of music from the United States. Since the movies on the TV shows didn't have any subtitles, we would really have to pay attention. For me that was very helpful because ever since I was very young, and even though I wasn't studying English formally, I was exposed to it, so I was learning even though I didn't realize it at the time. I actually learned a lot of English just by listening.

Cuando era niña teníamos televisión por cable y me exponía a muchas películas americanas y a mucha música de los Estados Unidos. Como las películas de los programas de televisión no tenían subtítulos, teníamos que prestar mucha atención. Para mí eso fue muy útil porque desde muy joven y aunque no estaba estudiando inglés formalmente, estaba expuesta a ello, así que estaba aprendiendo aunque no me diera cuenta en ese momento. De hecho, aprendí mucho inglés con sólo escuchar.

Listening is one of the most undervalued skills when learning a new language.

Escuchar es una de las habilidades más infravaloradas cuando se aprende un nuevo idioma.

Third, there´s speaking.

Tercero, está hablar.

Reading and listening are input, on the other hand speaking is output. Whenever you're learning a new language you have to start speaking it from the beginning, whether it is only a few words, a few phrases, or some expressions to start a conversation. Since the beginning, you have to start speaking, I cannot emphasize it enough.

La lectura y la escucha son entrada, por otro lado el hablar es salida. Siempre que se aprende un nuevo idioma hay que empezar a hablarlo desde el principio, ya sea con unas pocas palabras, unas pocas frases o algunas expresiones para iniciar una conversación. Desde el principio, tienes que empezar a hablar, no puedo enfatizarlo lo suficiente.

Speaking of course is a little bit more complicated because you have to have enough vocabulary and you have to have the correct sound of the words and the correct pronunciation. Reading and listening help you with that. That's why they are very important. Whenever you have the opportunity to practice your speaking skills, do so.

Hablar, por supuesto, es un poco más complicado porque tienes que tener suficiente vocabulario y tienes que tener el sonido correcto de las palabras y la pronunciación correcta. La lectura y la escucha te ayudan con eso. Por eso son muy importantes. Siempre que tengas la oportunidad de practicar tus habilidades de habla, hazlo.

I used to practice my speaking skills with my friends and family. I have some cousins in the United States. They were born in Los Angeles, now they're living in Las Vegas. Every single time they would come and visit us in Hermosillo, during summer and Christmas holidays, I liked to be very nosy and I would listen to them and find out what they were speaking. I would then try to get into the conversation and answer to whatever they would say.

Solía practicar mis habilidades de conversación con mis amigos y mi familia. Tengo algunos primos en los Estados Unidos. Nacieron en Los Ángeles y ahora viven en Las Vegas. Cada vez que venían a visitarnos a Hermosillo, durante verano y vacaciones de Navidad, me gustaba entrometerme y escucharlos, y averiguar de lo que estaban hablando. Luego trataba de entrar en la conversación y responder a lo que decían.

Good speaking skills usually take a lot more time to acquire since, you have to have the bases to start putting together more complex sentences.

Lograr buenas habilidades de habla suelen tardar mucho más tiempo en adquirirse, ya que hay que tener las bases para empezar a armar frases más complejas.

Finally, we have writing.

Finalmente, tenemos la escritura.

The last skill is the most complicated, because when we write we should be very careful with the structure. When we're speaking, the structure might not be that important. If we have mistakes or errors, they might not be as noticeable, as opposed to when you are writing. Writing correctly is more challenging. Good writing skills come very handy when you go abroad to study at a University or when you have to go abroad for work.

La última habilidad es la más complicada, porque cuando escribimos debemos tener mucho cuidado con la estructura. Cuando hablamos, la estructura puede no ser tan importante. Si tenemos errores o fallos, puede que no se noten tanto, a diferencia de cuando se escribe. Escribir correctamente es más difícil. Las buenas habilidades de escritura son muy útiles cuando vas al extranjero a estudiar a una Universidad o cuando tienes que ir al extranjero por trabajo.

I used to practice my writing skills by sending letters, (yes, the old fashion ones) to one of my cousins in Los Angeles. I had a lot of mistakes in my writing at the beginning, but she was very kind supporting me in the process, telling me that I was doing very good. “Just a couple of mistakes here and there” she used to say. Even though my writing needed lots of improvement, at least I was practicing.

Solía practicar mis habilidades de escritura enviando cartas, (sí, de las antiguas) a una de mis primas en Los Ángeles. Tuve muchos errores en mi escritura al principio, pero ella fue muy amable al apoyarme en el proceso, diciéndome que lo estaba haciendo muy bien. "Sólo un par de errores aquí y allá" solía decir. Aunque mi escritura necesitaba muchas mejoras, al menos estaba practicando.

Even when my English level was advanced, I still struggled writing papers when I studied abroad. Teachers would correct my structure mistakes and that was embarrassing. Now I teach composition and I get to correct the student's papers.

Incluso cuando mi nivel de inglés era avanzado, todavía me costaba escribir trabajos cuando estudiaba en el extranjero. Los profesores corregían mis errores de estructura y eso era vergonzoso. Ahora enseño composición y yo corrijo los trabajos de los estudiantes.

There´re a lot of ways in which we can practice nowadays, especially because we have the internet and we can send text messages, whatsapp messages and emails so even though we don't send physical letters anymore we can still practice our writing skills.

Hay muchas maneras en las que podemos practicar hoy en día, especialmente porque tenemos Internet y podemos enviar mensajes de texto, mensajes de "whatsapp" y correos electrónicos, así que aunque ya no enviemos cartas físicas, podemos practicar nuestras habilidades de escritura.

Hey! What about grammar? You might ask…

¡Oye! ¿Qué hay de la gramática? Podrías preguntar...

Grammar is not a language skill. However, it is implicit in every one of them. So, do we need to study grammar?

La gramática no es una habilidad del lenguaje. Sin embargo, está implícita en cada una de ellas. Entonces, ¿necesitamos estudiar la gramática?

As a teacher I try to promote speaking in my classes with a strong emphasis in listening. Mainly, I try to generate an output (oral production) in my students, one that is effective for communicative purposes.

Como profesora, intento promover el habla en mis clases con un fuerte énfasis en la escucha. Principalmente, trato de generar una "salida" (producción oral) en mis estudiantes, una que sea efectiva para propósitos comunicativos.

Reading and writing are mostly assigned for homework, students can do this on their own. I tend to be very forgiving with grammar at the beginning, because what you want is for the student to feel confident and gain fluency.

La lectura y la escritura se asignan principalmente de tarea, los estudiantes pueden hacer esto por su cuenta. Tiendo a ser muy indulgente con la gramática al principio, porque lo que quieres es que el estudiante se sienta seguro y gane fluidez.

However, as I always tell my students, as soon as you are approaching an intermediate or advanced level, you should pay more attention to structure and grammar. So the answer to the question is yes, grammar is important, having in mind that the objective is to speak correctly.

Sin embargo, como siempre les digo a mis alumnos, tan pronto te acerques a un nivel intermedio o avanzado, debes prestar más atención a la estructura y la gramática. Así que la respuesta a la pregunta es sí, la gramática es importante, teniendo en cuenta que el objetivo es hablar correctamente.

But, aren't we supposed to learn in a natural way without any grammar rules?

Pero, ¿no se supone que debemos aprender de forma natural sin reglas gramaticales?

When we were babies, the only resource we had was listening. That was our only input. We were exposed 24/7 to lots words ever since we were born. Maybe in a year or so, we spoke our first word. Our brain was wired to learn the language this way. As adults, we have other forms of input and we have others tools, and even though we could learn the natural way just as we did as babies, our brains are no longer wired to do so, and it would probably take us longer. Thus learning a language for an adult results to be a little bit more difficult, but not impossible. It all relies on the motivation, dedication and commitment you have to reach the objective.

Cuando éramos bebés, el único recurso que teníamos era escuchar. Esa era nuestra única aportación. Estuvimos expuestos 24/7 a muchas palabras desde que nacimos. Tal vez en un año más o menos, dijimos nuestra primera palabra. Nuestro cerebro estaba conectado para aprender el lenguaje de esta manera. Como adultos, tenemos otras formas de entrada y tenemos otras herramientas, y aunque podríamos aprender de forma natural como lo hicimos cuando éramos bebés, nuestros cerebros ya no están conectados para hacerlo y muy probablemente nos tomaría mas tiempo. Por lo tanto, el aprendizaje de un idioma para un adulto resulta ser un poco más difícil, pero no imposible.Todo depende de la motivación.dedicación y compromiso que tengas para alcanzar el objetivo.

The key to language acquisition is LOTS of input.

La clave de la adquisición de idiomas es MUCHA exposición (entrada).

Thanks to the internet we have lots of resources at hand. We can download podcasts, watch series movies, youtube videos, the news, and an unlimited number of other resources.

Gracias a Internet tenemos muchos recursos a mano. Podemos descargar podcasts, ver películas de series, videos de youtube, las noticias, y un número ilimitado de otros recursos.

I´m learning French on my own now, so I´m always on the look for either videos, series, news, movies or at least audio that I can use as input. My intention is for you to have the right input in Spanish.

Estoy aprendiendo francés por mi cuenta ahora, así que siempre estoy buscando ya sea videos, series, noticias, películas o al menos audio que pueda usar como entrada. Mi intención es que tengas la exposición adecuada (entrada) en español.

My blogs will be bilingual to help the basic students. I don't like translation when I teach, because translating is complicated. However, it can be helpful to notice the differences on the mechanics of the language especially when you're starting. This can be done on your own at your own pace.

Mis blogs serán bilingües para ayudar a los estudiantes básicos. No me gusta la traducción cuando enseño, porque traducir es complicado. Sin embargo, puede ser útil notar las diferencias en la mecánica del idioma, especialmente cuando estás empezando. Esto se puede hacer por tu cuenta a tu propio ritmo.

I want to create content to engage you, so that learning turns to be easy and natural.

Quiero crear contenido que te atrape, para que el aprendizaje sea fácil y natural.

Immersion is the most important part of language acquisition. To be exposed to a language is the best way to learn it. This is probably why immersion programs are so popular. Whether you experience the target language by visiting the country where it is spoken or you do it on your own at home, INPUT is the key for learning.

La immersion es la parte más importante de la adquisición del lenguaje. Estar expuesto a un idioma es la mejor manera de aprenderlo. Probablemente por eso los programas de inmersión son tan populares. Ya sea que experimentes el idioma meta visitando el país donde se habla o lo hagas por tu cuenta en casa, INPUT (exposición) es la clave para el aprendizaje.
