How I fell back in love with my city in the desert.

Como volví a enamorarme de mi ciudad en el desierto otra.
Hermosillo is my hometown. It is the capital city of the state of Sonora, 3 hours from the border with Arizona. Many people consider Hermosillo a great city to live in. You could say that being close to the United States and the beach represents living with more options and a better quality of life.
Hermosillo es mi ciudad natal. Es la ciudad capital del estado de Sonora a 3 horas de la frontera con Arizona. Muchas personas consideran a Hermosillo como una gran ciudad para vivir. Se puede decir que el estar cerca de los Estados Unidos y la playa representa vivir con más opciones y una mejor calidad de vida.
I didn't used to see it that way, until I experienced Hermosillo in someone else's eyes.
Yo no solía verlo así, hasta que experimenté Hermosillo en los ojos de otra persona.
I was always a restless girl with many interests. I loved drawing, painting, writing, reading, listening to music and especially dancing. My parents were elementary school teachers and I think that's where my interest in education comes from. I still have many interests, I consider myself a person with many passions and therefore very curious to experience other cultures, other countries and meet different people.
Siempre fuí una niña inquieta con muchos intereses. Me encantaba dibujar, pintar, escribir, leer, escuchar música y sobre todo bailar. Mis padres eran maestros de primaria y creo que de ahí viene mi interés por la educación. Todavía conservo muchos intereses, me considero una persona con muchas pasiones y por lo tanto con mucha curiosidad por experimentar otras culturas, otros países y conocer a personas diferentes.
I did not find it easy to live in the desert, I was bored with my surroundings, with the same people, the same places, the same ideology and the terrible heat.
No me parecía fácil vivir en el desierto, estaba enfadada de mi entorno, de la misma gente, los mismos lugares, la misma ideología y el terrible calor.
I got the opportunity to study abroad and live in other bigger, more interesting cities with better climates. Once I returned to my city it took me a lot of work to re-adapt. It was a culture shock in reverse.
Me tocó la oportunidad de estudiar en el extranjero y vivir en otras ciudades más grandes, más interesantes y sobre todo con mejores climas. Una vez que regresé a mi ciudad me tomó mucho trabajo re-adaptarme. Fue un choque cultural a la inversa.
However, I continued teaching English and Spanish to foreigners and trying to cultivate my hobbies. One of the things I enjoy most about my job is meeting new people and listening to their stories. Hermosillo is an industrial and business destination and therefore there are many foreigners who need to learn the Spanish language. In the meantime I kept dreaming of living outside my city once again.
Sin embargo, yo seguí enseñando inglés y español para extranjeros y tratando de cultivar mis hobbies. Unas de las cosas que más disfruto de mi trabajo es conocer gente nueva y escuchar sus historias. Hermosillo es un destino industrial y de negocios y por lo tanto hay muchos extranjeros que necesitan aprender el idioma español. Mientras tanto yo seguía soñando con vivir una vez más fuera de mi ciudad.
One day I got a call from a friend in Phoenix asking about immersion schools in Hermosillo. She asked me to please look into it.
Un día recibí la llamada de una amiga de Phoenix preguntando sobre escuelas de inmersión en Hermosillo. Me pidió que por favor lo investigara.
So I did, but I was surprised to find no school that had such adult programs. The future student in question had found immersion schools only in Oaxaca and Cuernavaca, places much more removed from the United States. She wanted to travel with her dog but did not want to have to put it through the ordeal of air travel.
Así lo hice pero me sorprendió no encontrar ninguna escuela que manejase ese tipo de programas para adultos. La futura alumna en cuestión había encontrado escuelas de inmersión sólo que en Oaxaca y Cuernavaca, lugares mucho más retirados de Estados Unidos. Ella quería viajar con su perro pero no quería tener que hacerlo pasar por la mala experiencia del viaje en avión.
My friend recommended her to consider Hermosillo, because she believed it is a great city. I honestly thought it would be much better to visit Oaxaca as it is much more touristy. Not finding anything and seeing that the few options did not fit her dates and budget, I decided to encourage myself and make her a proposal.
Mi amiga le recomendó que considerara Hermosillo, pues a ella le parecía una gran ciudad. Yo sinceramente pensé que sería mucho mejor visitar Oaxaca pues es mucho más turístico. Al no encontrar nada y al ver que las pocas opciones no se acomodaban a sus fechas y presupuesto, decidí animarme y hacerle una propuesta.
So once I understood her learning needs, I proposed an individualized immersion program. What really closed the deal was the proposal for working on a short story to be read to the children at Casa Guadalupe, since she is a creative writer and teacher of composition and English at a university in Phoenix.
Así fue que una vez entendidas sus necesidades de aprendizaje, le propuse un programa de inmersión individualizado. Lo que realmente cerró el trato fue la propuesta de trabajar en un cuento corto para leer a los niños de casa Guadalupe, pues ella es escritora creativa y maestra de composición e inglés en una universidad de Phoenix.
And so it was, that once the details of the trip and stay were arranged, I had my first Spanish student for the immersion program. I couldn't have asked for a better student. She was always cheerful and interested in all the activities.
Y así fue, que una vez que se arreglaron los detalles del viaje y estadía, tuve mi primera alumna de español para el programa de inmersión. No pude pedir una mejor alumna. Siempre dispuesta alegre e interesada en todas las actividades.
By showing her my city, my culture, all my favorite places, and my traditional food, among other things, I was able to reconnect with my hometown.
Por medio de mostrarle mi ciudad, mi cultura, todos mis lugares favoritos, y mi comida tradicional, entre otras cosas, me reencontré con mi ciudad de origen.
It was nice to see the expression of surprise and adventure in my student's eyes as she delighted in every street “taco”, excursion to the markets, every mural, visit to museums and galleries, shopping centers, dancing and music outings, and every practice and exposure to the language.
Era agradable ver la expresión de sorpresa y aventura en los ojos de mi alumna que se deleitaba con cada taco callejero, excursiones a los mercados, cada mural, visitas a museos y galerías, centros comerciales, salidas a bailar y a escuchar música, y cada práctica y exposición al idioma.
I loved seeing my city through the eyes of a foreign person and I felt so lucky to live here.
Me encantó ver mi ciudad a través de los ojos de una persona extranjera y me sentí tan
afortunada de vivir aquí.
I was amazed to find little magic corners in my favorite cafes, which my student also enjoyed greatly. I was fascinated to see my salsa class group with other eyes and from another perspective, my favorite bars and restaurants, our traditional Sonoran food, the artisan beer, our music, my people.
Me maravilló encontrarme con pequeños rincones mágicos en mi cafés favoritos, que mi alumna también disfruto grandemente. Me fascinó ver a mi grupo de clases de salsa con otros ojos y desde otra perspectiva,mis bares y restaurantes favoritos, nuestra comida tradicional sonorense, la cerveza artesanal, nuestra música, mi gente.
Even my charity activities that I usually get involved in, which already seemed so dull, took on a new shine. My student was so enthusiastic about the idea of giving bread and coffee to the immigrants, an activity I used to do during summers with my friend who is a pastor. So, even though it wasn´t in the program, we did it.
Incluso mis actividades de caridad en las que usualmente me involucro y que ya parecían tan deslustradas, tomaron nuevo brillo. Mi alumna se entusiasmó con la idea de ir a dar pan y café a los inmigrantes, una actividad que yo realizaba en verano con una amiga mía que es pastora. Así que, aunque no estaba en el programa que lo hicimos.
I felt so lucky to live near the beach. In fact, there are two beaches nearby: San Carlos and Bahía de Kino.
Me sentí tan afortunada de vivir cerca de la playa. De hecho son dos playas las que tenemos cerca: San Carlos y Bahía de Kino.
I was proud to introduce my high school students who could communicate perfectly in English with my student from Phoenix and who were so patient and kind to her. It was also great to be able to share my friends and show off my beautiful, open, warm and friendly Sonoran people.
Me sentí orgullosa de presentar a mis alumnos de preparatoria que podían comunicarse perfectamente en inglés con mi alumna de Phoenix y que eran tan pacientes tan amables con ella. Fué genial el poder también compartir a mis amistades y presumir a mi gente sonorense tan bella, abierta, cálida y amistosa.
I was so happy with the experience with the boys from Casa Guadalupe, who being so restless, on this occasion, paid attention, were interested in my student's story and were receptive and very loving.
Me sentí feliz con la experiencia con los chicos de casa Guadalupe, qué siendo tan inquietos, en esta ocasión, prestaron atención, se interesaron en la historia de mi alumna y fueron receptivos y muy amorosos.
I saw my own life with new eyes and I was happy to be able to live in Hermosillo doing everything I do. But above all, the experience made me appreciate the gift of making a new friendship so close physically and emotionally, that as soon as this long quarantine of 2020 passes, I can take my car and drive to visit her.
Vi mi propia vida con nuevos ojos y me sentí feliz de poder vivir en Hermosillo haciendo todo lo que hago. Pero sobre todo, la experiencia me hizo apreciar el regalo de hacer una nueva amistad tan cercana tanto en afinidad como en distancia, que en cuanto pase esta larga cuarentena del 2020, puedo tomar mi carro y manejar para ir a visitarla.
I discovered the great value of my city, in its flavors, in the exposure of its culture, in its music, in its nightlife, in all the amenities we have to enjoy, but especially in its people so willing to connect and help foreigners learning the language.
Descubrí el gran valor de mi cuidad, en sus sabores, en la exposición de su cultura, en su música, en su vida nocturna, en todas las amenidades que tenemos para disfrutar, pero sobre todo en su gente tan dispuesta a conectar y ayudar extranjeros aprendiendo el idioma.
I´m starting the Vive Spanish Immersion Adventure project with the intention of helping people to achieve their goal of learning Spanish. But my intention is also a little selfish, I do it to be able to repeat that wonderful feeling of sharing something that is so mine and that I show with pride.
Empiezo el proyecto de Vive Spanish Immersion Adventure con la intención de ayudar a la gente a alcanzar su objetivo de aprender español. Pero mi intención es también un poco egoísta, Lo hago para poder repetir ese sentimiento tan maravilloso de compartir algo que es tan mío y que muestro con orgullo.
My student returned to Phoenix with the firm intention of coming back. It may not happen this year, but I will be here preparing for when we can go out again to reconnect with our people. It will be a great celebration.
Mi alumna volvió a Phoenix con la firme intención de regresar. Tal vez no pase este año, pero aquí estaré preparándome para cuando podamos salir otra vez a re-econtarnos con los nuestros. Será una gran celebración.
